Why do I, a Psychotherapist, work at Riverdale and how does that help you? Because here my clients have easy access to the Homeopaths and Body therapies, such as Craniosacral Therapy, Intuitive Healing, Massage, Bowen, and Aromatherapy. Why is this important? We are a body-mind-spiritual system, and combining of these avenues can be addressed to alleviate suffering more effectively and efficiently.
For this article, I’m going to address the overlap of Homeopathy and Psychotherapy in particular, and although this is applicable to couples, I will do another article specifically on Psychotherapy for couples later in the year.
Working with Homeopaths allows me to help clients who want a drug free approach to their mental health conditions such as those on the Depression and/or Anxiety continuum, and in a number of cases, Addictions. It also helps enormously with coming off a drug regimen, while being appropriately monitored by an M.D. or Psychiatrist.
So how can these two approaches to physical and mental illness compliment and help each other? What is it that each of them does, and where do they meet up?
Stress and other Emotional difficulties
If you’re struggling with an emotionally overwhelming situation, a mental illness, or are having problems in your intimate or work relationships, being able to get perspective as to what might be going on, is tremendously helpful. Psychotherapy and Homoeopathy can work in tandem and can help you to:
- feel stronger and more balanced in your body
- to understand and resolve the emotions underlying the defensive behaviour that contributes to our difficulties
- have more self compassion as well as more self awareness
- feel more empowered in the world and stressful situations
To be able to manage stress effectively, you need a trusted and confidential relationship to enable you to talk about your raw, painful and overwhelming emotions. Psychotherapy will provide that safe space, whilst the homeopathic consult begins to teach you more awareness of your body’s patterns. This is so helpful as our bodies have a wonderful way of alerting us to stress when we know how to listen.
The two therapies together, begin to teach you how your emotions are connected to your physical patterns and experiences. The individualized Homeopathic remedy that your Homeopath prescribes for you will help to release blocks that can then be worked through in therapy.
How does talking about these emotions help? Well, it’s not just talking about them, it’s also about having an outside perspective that helps to hold a mirror up for you to see yourself and the path you want to choose, clearly. Have you ever felt how your body’s tension changes when you’re explaining a distressing incident to someone and they say something like “that must have been quite awful for you” or “tell me more about what that hurt felt like for you”. Of course, our social support systems do that in part too, and they are equally of value, but it’s quite difficult for loved ones to hold up that more ‘objective’ mirror that someone with the training of a Psychotherapist can do. A Psychotherapist can also give you strategies and exercises to help you to use the insights that the reflection brings to foster change and healing in your life.
Chronic illness or terminal/palliative care
A lot of the above is relevant for these situations too. These situations have a powerful impact on individuals and their families. Whether situations are drawn out or traumatically sudden, there’s a lot of emotional difficulty to be navigated through. People are often confused about their options and the choices they need to make. Psychotherapy is especially helpful in these types of situations.
With my 30 years of experience in the field of psychology and broad knowledge base of different energy techniques, homeopathy and other physical therapies, together, we can form a treatment plan specific to you and your situation and so thus expedite your transition to health.
