Aromatherapy offers a number of Essential Oils to help us diminish the discomfort of a cold and also reduce the risk of infections. The Essential Oils work at two levels, they are anti-bacterial and anti-viral, they also stimulate the body's ability to fight off infection.
It is very useful to start a treatment with Essential Oils at the very first sign of infection. At this point, a hot bath with a few drops of an anti-viral oil added will help the body get rid of toxins through sweating, and will also induce a deep, restful sleep. The most effective oil for this use is Ti-tree, add 3-4 drops. As an alternative you can use a blend of Lavender and Eucalyptus, using 3 drops of each. Peppermint oil together with Lavender will help the body to get rid of chills and sluggish fellings that often precede sneezing and a runny nose. Do not use more than 3 drops of Peppermint oil.
Besides hot baths, steam inhalations are also very effective and powerful. They clear congested nasal passages and soothe inflamed mucous membrane of the nose and throat. Very hot steam, as hot as can be tolerated without actually burning the nose and throat, with 2-4 drops of Ti-tree or Eucalyptus oil, alternating with Rosemary and Peppermint, increases the effectiveness of the steam.
Use these oils in the earlier part of the day and at night use Lavender and/or Marjoram which will reduce shivers and aching, and also helps with headaches associated with the cold. Thyme oil used in inhalations will help in cases of sore throats. It is also helpful to use aromatic burners at home and in the office when we have a cold. They keep the environment clear of bacteria and viruses using any of the oils mentioned above.
Give yourself a head and foot massage using the Essential Oils already discussed. Massage not only helps with the symptoms but helps to relax your body and mind. Remember also to take sometime to relax your mind using other relaxation techniques. It has been proven that taking at least 10 to 15 minutes each day to meditate brings all sorts of benfits not only to ourselves and our bodies and minds but to everybody around us.
Make sure you drink enough water throughout the day. Take time from work if possible; rest is what your body needs. Good nutrition is a plus, eat good amounts of fruits and vegetables. Eat fresh garlic with your food or take it in the form of tablets. I strongly recommend Oregano Oil and or Echinacea, they work wonders especially if you start taking them at the beginning of the cold as directed on the bottle.
Do not get anxious with the news about the latest strain of the cold virus. Your body is your best defence to all these viruses and bacteria. Take good care of it.
